In the context of modern life, characterized by constant streams of information and an unprecedented awareness of life on the global scale, craft has been about attempting to shrink down the world, and focus the powers of perception on the object and the moment. My work is a means through which I investigate materials, mechanics and aesthetics. For the last 7 years or so, I have primarily made these explorations through pieces of functional pottery. Recently, other materials, such as wood and steel have come into my wheelhouse.
Previously, this was a state of being I sought through pottery as a kind of remedy for sensory overload. As the potter’s wheel turns, my attention must be drawn into the pot. While I keep the clay in the still center of the wheel, all other thoughts will fall away, for a moment, as my concern becomes solely for the clay running between my fingers. This is calm is not innate to me, but rather a physical and mental exercise. This state of mind informs my process, and the objects which I make, with my focus being on creating functional, physically and aesthetically stimulating objects.
I do not view myself as a person with incredible insight, and I do not seek to make a grand statement on my personal identity. What I do have is curiosity, and a fascination with craft traditions and techniques. It is my hope that through these explorations I will gain some understanding, and that this will be reflected in the end product of my labors.
